Weighing system for a hospital bed

Hero: a specific structure for pediatric intensive care.

Weighing system for a hospital bed

Requirement

Malvestio needed to monitor, manage, and process the weighing data from the load cells installed on Hero, the first bed with a weighing system entirely designed to meet the needs of pediatric intensive care.

The goal is to ensure the highest level of accuracy, safety and comfort for young patients, while providing optimal support for healthcare professionals through the use of advanced technologies.

Malvestio is an italian company operating in the medical sector. It designs and manufactures advanced, high-tech beds and furnishings for patient care and hospital stays worldwide.

For Malvestio, it is essential to measure and record a precise and reliable body weight value, enabling healthcare professionals to make case-specific assessment.

In addition, it is important to understand how the patient's weight is distributed across each load cell in order to verify the patient's presence in the bed and ensure prompt intervention by a medical staff.

Our solution

For the Hero bed, we used:

How does it work?

The 4 bending beam load cells installed at the four corners of the Hero bed are connected to the CLM8 junction box located beneath the bed frame.

At the same time, the Instrument Manager management software is installed on a PC and used by Malvestio's specialized technicians to configure and calibrate the CLM8.

Through automatic and detailed diagnostics of each individual load cell, the CLM8 detects any anomalies and enables technicians to respond promptly.
Load distribution analysis and data archiving permit monitoring and saving the data recorded by the load cells.

All the components installed on the Hero bed are OIML R 76 - EN45501 approved. In a clinical setting, a patient's body weight is a very useful physiological parameter, as it is an indication of the state of the patient's overall health. For this reason, the components must be approved and ensure precise, accurate, and repeatable measurements.

The added value

  • The compact size of the CLM8 junction box simplifies installation on the bed while ensuring advanced performance with minimal space requirements.
  • The CLM8 junction box performs automatic and detailed diagnostics of each individual load cell. This means any errors or anomalies in weight readings are immediately flagged, allowing them to be identified without delay.
  • The load distribution analysis performed by CLM8 makes it possible to monitor alla patient changes. When interfaced with the algorithm developed by Malvestio, the junction box also helps prevent potential falls or episodes of patient agitation.
  • The Instrument Manager software speeds up and simplifies the calibration process of the weighing system during installation and setup.
  • The guided procedure and intuitive instructions are easy to understand and drastically reduce the likelihood of human error: the calibration process for medical devices is optimized and production timelines are reduced.
  • The ease of integration between Instrument Manager and the system installed on Hero, combined with the advanced diagnostic functions of CLM8, have made it possible to create a customized interface tailored to operator needs while continuing to guarantee weighing accuracy.
