ScrumMachine: a machine designed for rugby scrum training
A special application for improving player performance
Requirement
Measure the pushing forces applied by rugby players on a scrum training machine and collect the data measured in kg, to then record and process the data to improve athlete performance during this phase in the game.
The pushing forces applied to the pads must be measurable in two directions, front and side, in order to monitor and correct any imbalances the player may have when pushing.
Our solution
To develop the application, we equipped a 4-pad Rhino Dictator machine for scrum training with:
- 8 FBK-1T custom biaxial shear beam load cells;
- 2 CLM8 junction boxes in an ABS IP67 case;
- 1 MODWF Wi-Fi weight transmitter;
- 1 tablet App specifically developed by our engineers.
How does it work?
Behind each pad there are 2 biaxial load cells: 1 in the upper part and 1 in the lower part.
When the player pushes against the pad, the 2 biaxial load cells measure two forces simultaneously on the front and side axes.
Each pad therefore measures 4 force signals, for a total of 16 signals.
The measured signals are collected by the 2 CLM8 intelligent junction boxes, fitted on the machine's framework inside an ABS case.
Since each juction box can collect up to 8 signals, it was necessary to use 2 units.
Each CLM8 is also equipped with custom firmware, developed by our R&D department to support the application.
The junction boxes transmit the weight signals via an RS485 serial port to the MODWF weight transmitter.
The MODWF act as a bridge and generates a Wi-Fi network on which it transmits the received data. The same network is also connected to the data processing app.
After downloading the App onto your tablet you can then manage, monitor, analyze, record and repeat the training exercises for both groups and individual players, and compare the different data measured over time.
The added value
- Since the FBK-1T custom load cell is biaxial, it measures both the orthogonal and tangential forces simultaneously, allowing all the necessary information to be acquired from a single cell.
- The 8 independent channels of the CLM8 enable collecting information from 8 different measurement points and transmitting it reliably and in real-time to the MODWF.
- The MODWF, thanks to its ability to generate a Wi-Fi network signal, transmits the data and simultaneously allows the App to connect and receive the information.
- The App, developed specifically for managing training, enables monitoring the performance of players, improving it, and generating graphical statistics for data analysis.
- All the installed components, combined with the App developed by our engineers, make the scrum machine "intelligent", meaning it can provide technical teams with all the necessary information to improve the scrum phase of the game.
