Weighing and monitoring system for large vessel

Requirement

Metacentro ship design needs to monitor the weight of a large yacht during its construction and outfitting phase.

The purpose of this weighing is to constantly monitor the vessel's weight, which must fall within the final range estimated during the design phase.

The arrangement of the load cells must take into account that weight is typically not distributed uniformly along the entire length of the vessel. In some areas, such as the engine room, the load will be more concentrated than in others.

Metacentro ship design is an Italian consulting firm with over 20 years of experience, specializing in naval and nautical design.

Our solution

The following were used for monitoring:

  • 24 CBX 30000 kg compression load cells;
  • 15 CBX 50000 kg compression load cells;
  • 24 V15000 load cell mounting kits;
  • 15 V30000 load cell mounting kits;
  • 39 TLK weight transmitters with rechargeable external battery.

How does it work?

Each CBX load cell, installed in its V-series mounting kits, was positioned in a specific part of the hull and placed between the vessel and the steell cradle supporting it.

The load cells are not connected in parallel, each one is monitored individually with a TLK weight transmitter.

The vessel's load is monitored by recording the weight detected by each individual load cell with the transmitter. By then summing all the detected loads, the vessel's total weight is obtained in real time.

It is not necessary to monitor all the load cells simultaneously. The purpose is to verify that the vessel is registering the steps planned in the design, so that any necessary modifications can be made before the yacht is fully completed.

The system was installed when the hull was already partially built, so in this case a very high degree of accuracy can be obtained only for the vessel's total weight, but it is not possible to obtain a correct and reliable assessment of the longitudinal and transverse center of gravity that determines the vessel's actual stability at sea.

The correct procedure for determining stability at this stage would be to place the vessel direclty on load cells already arranged for this purpose, so that the measured values accurately reflect the actual distribution of the masses.

The added value

  • The CBX compression load cells detect the yacht's weight and allow it to be compared with the theoretical weight calculated in the design.
  • The TLK weight transmitter records the weights of the individual load cells at regular intervals, also determining the vessel's total weight, thereby monitoring that it falls within the parameters defined in the initial design.
  • The combination of CBX load cells with the TLK transmitter detects any deviations from the predefined parameter range and helps to make necessary modifications to the design in a timely manner.
  • The load cells, mounting kits, and weight transmitters can be reused in subsequent projects to weigh and monitor small, medium and large yachts.
